WeTransfer users, especially creatives, have been facing a significant challenge with the platform’s expiry dates. The issue arises when files are not downloaded immediately after receiving the link or email. Users often forget about the files, only to realize later that the link has expired. This leads to the inconvenience of requesting the sender to resend the files, causing frustration for both parties involved.
Recently, WeTransfer introduced a new feature on its mobile app called “Save for Now,” allowing recipients to modify the expiry date of files. However, the company’s announcement about extending the expiration date was met with confusion. Initially, the messaging implied that WeTransfer links would no longer expire, which turned out to be inaccurate. The clarification stated that the number of days for extending the expiry date depends on the user’s plan. Without utilizing the save option, links can still expire, requiring users to take action to prevent this.
To address the issue of link expiration, users can now save received links to a separate folder on WeTransfer’s mobile app using the “Save for Now” feature. This feature essentially acts as a bookmark icon, allowing users to access the files later without the hassle of sifting through email inboxes. Testing revealed that with a free account, users could extend a link’s expiry date for up to seven days on the app, compared to the default three-day expiry from link creation.
WeTransfer was acquired by Italy-based Bending Spoons last month, adding to its portfolio of established apps like Evernote and Meetup. CEO Alexandar Vassilev highlighted the platform’s growth, boasting 600,000 subscribers and 80 million monthly active users over the past decade. This acquisition could bring about improvements and enhancements to WeTransfer, benefiting its user base.
While WeTransfer’s attempt to address the expiry date issue with the introduction of the “Save for Now” feature is a step in the right direction, there is room for more clarity and improved user experience. By providing clear information on expiry date extensions and simplifying the process for users to save and access files, WeTransfer can enhance its service and alleviate user frustration.
