Markforged Introduces Metal Printing Capabilities to FX10 Machine

Markforged made an exciting announcement on Tuesday regarding the addition of metal printing capabilities to its FX10 machine. This new feature, known as the FX10 Metal Kit, allows the industrial additive manufacturing machine to utilize metal filaments, including a new stainless steel option. The FX10 initially launched at the end of last year with the ability to print composites like carbon fiber and carbon-fiber-filled nylon.

According to CEO Shai Terem, the FX10 was specifically designed as a modular platform, enabling the company to introduce new innovations and upgrades without requiring customers to purchase a new printer each year. Additionally, Markforged regularly releases new software capabilities to enhance the machine’s performance. The FX10 Metal Kit is expected to provide long-term value on factory floors for years to come.

Markforged positions their technologies as pivotal in strengthening manufacturing resiliency by facilitating industrial production at the point of need. This approach aligns with the growing demand for efficient and adaptable manufacturing solutions in various industries.

The metal 3D printing sector has experienced significant changes over the past year, exemplified by Nano Dimension’s acquisition of Desktop Metal. Markforged also faced challenges, such as a legal dispute with Continuous Composites resulting in a $17.34 million court ruling. Despite these setbacks, Markforged maintains a positive outlook, emphasizing their strong balance sheet, cost control measures, and continued focus on innovative product development.

To streamline operations and enhance profitability, Markforged is taking steps to lower annual operating expenses by up to $70 million. During an earnings call, CFO Assaf Zipori highlighted cost-saving measures, including terminating lease agreements on the company’s former headquarters. These efforts demonstrate Markforged’s commitment to maximizing efficiency and financial performance.

Upcoming Showcase

The new Metal Kit for the FX10 machine will be unveiled at the Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago next month. This showcase will feature live demonstrations of both continuous fiber reinforced composites and metal printing capabilities, showcasing the versatility and advanced functionality of Markforged’s additive manufacturing technology.

Markforged’s introduction of metal printing capabilities to the FX10 machine represents a significant milestone in the evolution of additive manufacturing technology. By combining innovative features with a modular platform design, the company is positioned to drive further growth and adoption of advanced manufacturing solutions in the industry.
