Meta, like many other tech giants, has developed its own generative AI model named Llama. Variants of Llama

Llama is not just a single model; it consists of a family of models with different capabilities and sizes. The latest versions include Llama 3.1 8B, Llama 3.1 70B, and Llama 3.1 405B, which was released in July 2024. These models are trained on various data sources, including web pages, public code, and synthetic data generated by other AI models. While Llama 3.1 8B and 70B are more compact and suitable for devices like laptops and servers, Llama 3.1 405B is a large-scale model that requires data center hardware.

Like other generative AI models, Llama can perform a range of tasks such as coding, answering math questions, and summarizing documents in multiple languages. It is capable of handling text-based workloads like analyzing PDFs and spreadsheets but currently does not support image processing. Llama models can be configured to use third-party apps and APIs for various tasks, making them versatile for developers.

Developers can download, use, and fine-tune Llama models across popular cloud platforms with over 25 partners hosting Llama, including Nvidia, Databricks, and Dell. Partners have built additional tools and services on top of Llama, enabling the models to run more efficiently and access proprietary data. Meta recommends using smaller models like Llama 8B and 70B for general-purpose applications, while reserving Llama 405B for tasks like model distillation and generating synthetic data.

To address potential risks associated with using Llama, Meta provides tools like Llama Guard, Prompt Guard, and CyberSecEval to ensure the model’s safe usage. Llama Guard helps detect and block problematic content, while Prompt Guard protects against malicious inputs intended to manipulate the model. CyberSecEval assesses the security risks posed by Llama models in various scenarios to app developers and end users. Despite these safety precautions, using generative AI models like Llama comes with certain risks and limitations, such as potential copyright infringement issues and the possibility of generating insecure code.
