UNRWA USA, a nonprofit organization founded in 2005, has been facing challenges due to Israel’s campaign against them. The impact of this campaign is difficult to measure, but UNRWA USA has spent a significant amount of money and staff resources trying to outbid Israel for Google search ad slots. Despite these efforts, UNRWA USA has seen a significant increase in donations, with 78,000 donors contributing in the first half of this year, which is a record for the organization.
One of the main concerns raised by UNRWA USA’s Executive Director, Kronenfeld, is that Americans are being exposed to Israel’s propaganda, potentially leading to a misunderstanding of UNRWA’s role in the ongoing crisis. Israel has been running search ads and video ads in the US claiming that UNRWA is connected to Hamas and employs terrorists. This misinformation could jeopardize support from the US government, which has been a significant donor to UNRWA in the past.
Google spokesperson Jacel Booth has stated that governments can run ads as long as they adhere to the company’s policies. Alleged violations can be reported by users and employees, and action is taken swiftly against ads that violate these policies. Despite these measures, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs in New York has not responded to multiple requests for comment on the situation over the past four months.
UNRWA employs about 30,000 people with the support of nearly $1.5 billion in annual donor funding. The organization provides education, food, and care for millions of Palestinian refugees in Gaza and surrounding areas. Supporters of UNRWA argue that Israel opposes the agency because it preserves the refugee status of Palestinians, potentially giving them a legal claim to occupied land in the future. Israel, on the other hand, has accused UNRWA of enabling Hamas and hindering peace efforts in the region.
In response to Israel’s accusations, UNRWA has taken action, including firing 13 employees this year based on evidence provided by Israel. The organization’s commissioner-general, Philippe Lazzarini, has emphasized the neutral and vital role UNRWA plays in the region. He has also implemented screening and training measures to prevent Hamas sympathizers from being a part of the organization.
Kronenfeld, who is Jewish, joined UNRWA USA in 2020 due to her personal beliefs and family history. Her grandfather’s experience escaping Nazi Germany instilled in her a strong conviction that no one should be mistreated based on their birthplace. Under her leadership, UNRWA USA has focused on ramping up online advertising efforts to generate more donations, aiming to bring in at least $3.90 for every dollar spent.
The ongoing campaign by Israel against UNRWA USA has raised concerns about public perception, funding, and the organization’s role in the region. Despite these challenges, UNRWA USA continues to work towards its mission of supporting Palestinian refugees and providing essential services in Gaza and neighboring areas. It is essential for all parties involved to engage in dialogue and collaborate towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
